Grief counseling for children? May. 19th, 2007 @ 04:23 pm

Tyler, my 5 year old son, is going through a phase right now and I'm pretty worried about him. He's got some big time anxiety and fear about death and dying. We frequently deal with melt downs usually before bed time, or if he is already upset about some other unrelated reason and I'm not quite sure what to do about it. He brings up my Great Grandma a lot, who died 2 years ago. He cries and cries about missing her. They were actually very close. When he was a baby, my grandma cared for him while I worked, and my great grandma moved in with her when he was little. He kept her so happy, when otherwise she was a little old grumpy 98 year old woman. They really did have a special connection. I've done everything I can think of to help- we make cards, we've visited her grave with flowers, we've looked through pictures. I've tried to help him understand that while she may be gone, she's always here in our hearts, and we have many great memories of her. Well, it usually doesn't end there, he then goes into hysterics about not wanting me or others in our lives to go away, and how he doesn't want to die, etc. I've found the best solution is to find a way to take his mind off of it- but it's obviously only a short term solution, since it returns several times a week.

I'm at a loss trying to help him through it on my own, and I've decided I should probably take him to a professional of some kind who can help him work through his grief. I know it's a long shot, but has any other parent gone through this and know of someone who can help us? Any books you've read? Anything? I'd really appreciate it!

Hey Mommas,

What's your favorite place for maternity resale? I need some nice black pants but don't want to do the $60 mall thing.

Does anyone know the bestest place to buy Thomas Train sets? We went to Micheals and you can get them with a 40% off coupon in the paper. I wouldn't mind buying them used as well...but I hate sifting through craigslist and ebay...I'm lazy.

» CLOTH DIAPER CIRCLE
It's PORTLAND DIAPER CIRCLE time again!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clothing diapering pros and wanna-bes here's your chance! Once again the Portland Diaper Circle will be gathering to talk, share, show and swap all things cloth. Whether you're thinking about using cloth diapers, already using cloth diapers, or even done with cloth diapers, join us for a fun 2-hours at the Kennedy School Community Room. Yes, we have an official room to meet in, however, it will cost $30 for the space. So a $1-2 donation would be great. Also, please bring cloth diapers to donate to MiracleDiapers.com At our last meeting we collected nearly 20 pounds of diapers to help get more baby bums into cloth.

I'd like to set aside some question/answer time for new moms so bring ideas/examples of newborn diapering if you can. Folding experts and snappi pros needed!

CLOTH DIAPER CIRCLE
10 a.m. - 12 noon
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17
Kennedy School Community Room (SE corner)
5736 NE 33rd Ave., Portland

Holiday/Birthday/"me" shopping early this year? Try this, all items are handmade and 100% of the proceed go to the Red Cross Katrina relief effort, and you get something out of it! If you can't afford anything, maybe just repost this in your blog(s) to spread the word! Every little bit helps.

» Help Wanted- will pay in cloth diapers!

I'm in NE Portland and I'm looking for someone with good organizational skills (I have none) to help me get my non-profit business running a little smoother.  I operate Miracle Diapers out of my home, and since I've started babysitting 11 hours a day M-F, I've gotten way behind on emails and orders.  If I could get a volunteer to come into my home and give me hand for a few hours for a couple of Saturdays, in return I would give them a stash of cloth diapers.

Questions?  Email me- Ruth@MiracleDiapers.com
